Ignou School of Studies – The Indira Gandhi National Open University has set up various schools to smoothly run its operation for various departments. Due to a large number of students and programmes, it becomes difficult for a single department to handle all the things.
The Ignou is one of the mega distance learning open universities in the world. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 (Act No. 50 of 1985). The degree, diploma and certificate provided by the university are recognised by all the member institutions of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and are at par with the same provided by all Indian Universities/Deemed Universities/ Institutions.
The main objective of the university was to promote and develop distance education in urban and rural areas of India. The university has been established with an objective to provide high-quality education and bring it to the door steps of people all over the country. It offers the different types of need-based and cost effective academic programmes.
To achieve all the above-mentioned objectives at such a huge level will never be easy.Because of the huge size of the university , it is not very easy to handle all the operations such as Admission, Examination, Results, Re-registration, etc by one authority or one department.
So, Ignou Schools of Studies have been established to develop interdisciplinary studies. Each School is having one Director position who leads the teams to handle all the operations such as to plan, supervise, develop and organise its academic programmes and courses.
They do their work and coordinate with the other Schools staff and the different academic, administrative and service wings of the university. The main reason behind developing these different schools in the university is to provide the learners with a wide range of programmes / courses out of which they can make a choice.
Here is the list of schools which are currently active in the university are mentioned below :
